Headers, dual exhaust, aluminum heads, higher compression pistons, longer stroke crakshaft, or nitous.

get rid of it,the money you will spend isn't worth it.
but....make sure the timing chain you buy has the slot for the woodruff key right on the dot for the timing, mill the heads and intake .30-.40 works good
intake has to be milled to line back up with heads milling it isn't gonnna do any thing for horses.4bbl gas gusling non efficent carb should do the trick on top, waste some money on a over priced intake, some shims for the vavle train and a cam somewhere around 270 280 adv dur, just call up your cam manufactuer of choice and ask for recommendations.
you are gonna be disap[pointed with the performance of a built 400.buy a efi 351w and be done with it.all kinds of power, EFI,plenty of aftermarket parts, and you will get better gas mileage.if you can afford to build a 400 you can afford a 351w and adapter plate from summit or jegs.
ever wonder why nobody swaps in 351m or 400's?(why most people don't swap)

you have an aftermarket intake and 4bbl?what have you done to the exhaust?those motors had low compression, retarded timing and small cams.
4bbls don't make power if you don't have the rest of the motor with it.what size carb and single or daul plane intake?

Here's my best cheaper idea for you. Dump off the stock fuel pump and replace it with a block-off plate. Get a nice little electric fuel pump that mounts outside of the tank. Mount it. Wire it in. Gain some power. And when you go to replace the timing chain someday-dump that stupid fuel pump cam (on the front of the cam gear) and replace it with a grade 8 washer of equal thickness. Don't use a high pressure fuel pump for a carb. though. It needs no more P.S.I. than your fingers can count, and probably less. Guess maybe 6 or 7ish. Next eliminate exhaust restrictions- glasspack mufflers instead of stock, and check your catalytic converters aren't clogged yearly (they're a real pain in the a**). My 351 Windsor got all bogged down once 'cause the converters clogged with carbon and debris.

Your motor is fine. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant. First off your motor is retarded for smog and emissions. The cam needs to be set straight up to take it off. Thats is the biggest thing. You can get some dome top pistons if you want. A cam and new chain are a must. Some 302C Aussie heads will fit as well. Check TMI for info. He builds up 400's and has some sick setups that you wont be disappointed in. Its already a stroked engine it just has shitty compression and its timing is retarded. Check out Ford Truck Enthusiast under the 335 series engine class for info and you will be surprised what you can do. You can work with the heads you have(new valves, roller rockers, work the exhaust a bit grinding away any bumps) buy TMI 0 deck pistons, they will give you around 9.5 scr.

Before you listen to someone tell you these 351/400M's are worthless, maybe try either one of these two places. They are very knowledgeable about Ford engines, and have many great ideas for the often forgotten and misguided M's.

They will do the work for you, or tell you what you need to do and sell you all the right parts.

www.barnetthighperformance.com - He has a huge passion for making these things scream. (492ci Strokers)

www.tmeyerinc.com - I had my 400 built by these guys....just plain awesome is all I can say.
Build it.
Beat on it.
Break it.
Build it better.

P.S. Starting fliud is NOT a viable alternative to nitrous.

I agree with the last two posts, these are misguided 'M' blocks because they were never updated to more modern electronic systems. the 400 is the longest stroke of any factory stock ford V8. I've done some research on this motor when i purchased my '79 and decided to rebuild what was already there. if you compare the factory hp numbers of a 400 2V to a 460 4V, you could probably get the hp numbers of a 460 if you build it right.

You can can get good number out of the 400.One of the guy here in Mississippi run on in the small block modified class.Tehy considerate it a small block. The chevy guys are bitching cause he only lost 2 races last year .but any way.He is running 351C4V heads on it with a little work.He is turing 9000 RPM's out of it.But with the clevend heads you have to run a spacer.I have had a 351M with headers and a cam and 4bbl.But I like my 460 better.Like any thing its what you like and yo can make good number with the 400 if built correctly.

T hat was a great articale Mil1ion.I try to learn more and more about what can be done with each motor.I printed it off and put it up with my other articales and ford engine book.Everyone harps on how easy and cheap a chevy is.Ford are just as cheap.Just have to search around. This is why Fords are better than whimpy bowtie any day. Make more power. My neighbor is a big ford nut has been since the 60s.He has a set of the 351c heads.not sure if there 4 or 2v.he has a lot of FE parts.Along with a 67, 4speed 427 ford not sure if its a galaxice or fairlain, and 1970 428 CJ mustang.May try to beat him out of the heads if I am able to by a truck to make a mud truck out of.next year.
