Hi

Recently picked up a tire carrier for my 87 fullsize bronco.
problem is I do not have the mounting holes for the carrier on the rear quarter panel. Would like to know how to install the carrier? can I just drill some holes and mount it? do I need some sort of rienforcement bracket? thx

No you can't just drill some holes [-X . The carrier requires some support inside the quarter panel to hold the weight. It is possible that the internal mounting brackets are already there and that the holes are filled with bondo. Mine is that way. There needs to be reenforcement where the hinges mount and a reinforcement plate assembly inside the tailgate where the latch mounts.

Check by removing the right tail light ad see if there is a reinforcing block just above the tail light and one just below it. If they are ther you can probably use an awl to poke out the bondo from the inside. Becareful not to buggger up the threads in the reenforcement blocks. The blots should thread in to it since they are pre tapped. If necessary get a tap and clean the threads.

Good luck,

:)>-

I have the same problem with the bondo. What size tap do i need to clean the threads and what size are the bolts? I never got the hardware when receiving my carrier.

From the look of mine, the hinge reinforcement is built into the inner structure of the rear quarter panel. Rather than a block it runs full length to the right of the tail light with nuts welded to it. The thread size appears to be 3/16 - 18.

I did it! at least me and my father did it. We put my spare tire carrier on. Now i gots a big ole tire sticking out the back! sweet... Oh, and the bolt size is 5/16-18, not 3/16-18 (i'm sure it was a typo) :)
