I have a 94 and the back window is stuck in the down position. Wiring seems to be ok. I took access panel off the tailgate, but i can't get to the window motor because the window is in the way. Is there a way to get the window up manually so I can get to the motor??

When you activate the motor with the switch do you hear it run? If so, you've probably got a bad gear and fortunately you can raise the window by hand. Just take the panel off the inside, and reach under and push. It will probably be a real pain, but that's what I had to do. If you do it with the tg open so you can get at the motor make sure you have something stacked to support the glass when it's extended.

I had the same probolme in my 82' and Im just getting ready to replace the gear. The motor is fine just the teeth on the gear went bad. Has anyone eevr done this or know of an easy way to do without taking out the window?

Real pain in the ass, but you can lower the window by hand. Then open the tailgate, and put some sawhorses, a table, or anything that will support the glass behind the open gate, and push the glass out onto it. If you push it out most of the way you can get to the motor.

The same thing happened on my 96. I took it to ford, and the limit switch was bad. The part cost around $20. and the labor was around $325.00.

I can't hear the motor running so I assumed that it was bad. So I should be able to pull the window up by hand?

Not without disengaging the gear from the motor. It could be the motor, but it is most likely the wiring. I assume you've checked all the fuses. Next step would be to try the tailgate switch to eliminate a bad in-dash switch being the culprit. If that's not it there's two ways to go. Check the wiring back as far as you can go with a multimeter, or go straight to removing the glass to get at the motor.

To get the window out you have to cut the rivets out that hold it to the regulators so you can remove the glass. Then start checking the wiring inside the tailgate, or use a 12v power supply on the motor to see if it turns. IF YOU REMOVE THE MOTOR BE CAREFUL!! The arms in there are spring loaded and quite powerful. If you don't brace them before you disengage the gear there's a very good chance you'll hurt yourself. If I remember correctly, they spring down so you may be ok. Just be sure to check which direction the spring goes before detaching the motor.

To put the glass back in properly though, you'll need a fairly large rivet gun. If you don't have one you may be able to find a local mechanic that will drive the rivets for you for free if you get everything ready to go back in. There's other ways to do it (smaller rivets and washers), but I like to put things back together the way they were.

Thanks Bradt, I've already checked the dash switch and the wiring as far back as the tailgate. I guess I'll need to remove the rivits and check the wiring inside.

Just repaired the window on my Bronco. No problem, but I would buy a motor and the gear off of e-bay first and have it there when you take it apart. Cheaper on e-bay than junk yard.
