88 F-350 with EFI 460 Starting/Running Problems

I have a 1988 Ford F-350 with an EFI 460 engine. It will start, run about 2 seconds, then dies. Will not re-start, seems to be flooding at this point. Wait a couple of hours, it will start, run a couple of seconds, die again. I have replaced the high pressure fuel pump, fuel pressure is at about 43 PSI key on, engine off. New TPI on distributor, no help. New fuel pump relay, no help. As a note, before this problem started, the fuel pumps would come on when the key was turned on, run a couple of seconds, shut off if you didn't start the truck. they now run all the time when the key is in the on position. If anyone can give any insight into what the problem may be, drop me an e-mail or post an answer here. My Ford dually is a large paperweight that my wife is growing annoyed with fast!!

Jim, did you ever figure out your problem? My truck is doing the exact same thing.

I was having such kind of problems with my f250 88, (An 5.8 Lts.), so if the new fuel pump do not stop, it may implied that the FUEL PRESURE REGULATOR is gone. All the fuel is passing to the tank again, you would have near zero presure now. Check again the fuel presure and replace FPR. If not, Ford use to have 2 fuel pump; One in the tank that send AMOUNT of fuel under low presure, and the other, (the one you replace), for high presure. If the primary is not sending suficient amount, the second will not stop asking for more, so you wil have a few seconds of propper fuel in the engine. Got it?

No other idea for now. Good luck.

Had a similar problem in e-150 with 5.8l. Check the ground wire to ecu (easy fix). My problem was actually the stator in the distrubitor.

I have a 1989 250hd 2wd 460efi a/t. I replaced ALL the sensors ... map sensor was the problem ...stalling at idle.All other sensors helped engine run smoother...600$ later.thanks to "cash for clunkers" my local yards are full of " ONCE" good running f-series trucks. I would try a computer out of a "known good" or "c-f-c" truck just like yours' and see what it does. Both of my low pressure fuel pumps have gone bad over the last 8 years , junk yard ones not a safe bet. Weak or dead pumps will run and run and run because the pressure never reaches the right level. I do not know what this number is. I have a suspicion OK pressure at idle does not mean pressure at WOT or" under load" is adeqate. Put a fuel pressure gage on the rail; record , crank, start, and stall pressures... compare to a fried's truck with same engine cid/ fuel syrtem. Will your computer or ignition module work in test truck???

Is this truck really flooding??!! Does the oil stink like gas?! Disconect the fuel supply ...crank engine... if spark is STRONG ...spray carb/choke cleaner or raw gas !!!CAREFULLY!!! into air intake...it should run as long as feed it a fuel!!
Sorry to blither on ... but it could get more in-depth , I'll wait to hear about test results.
My truck will sit for thee months, crank over twice and start ...winter or summer... although if you shut it off hot; I run into the store long enough to get directions or a bag of chips or a Half tank of gas,it will crank till the battery is weak. If you turn the key to "OFF" then crank it again it will start right up again...not flooded...something told that fuel not to pump, Im lost!!!! Any body got this story??

have you guys tried using a different ECM. my 89 f150 efi was doing all sorts of stuff, had no spark then had no gas, would start occasionally, would run when you sprayed quickstart in the T/B. changed the high pressure pump, the low pressure pump, ICM, coil, removed the fuel filter. changed fuel pressure regulator. plugged in an ECM from a different truck with the same engine and transmission setup and it has been running eversince.

just an idea we had this same problem with my dads 88 dump the pickup tube in the tank had a semi clogged strainer which would let it run for a few secs then die. just wish we figured it out before we did everything else.

iv been having very similar problems with my 88 f250, except once it does start as long as i hold/ (sometimes have to feather) throttle it revs just fine but the second i take my foot away it dies. To start from begininng i have duel tanks and there had been bad gas in the rear tank from previous owners, so i decided to go ahead n drop the tank to get it taken care of, it was to messed up to get done in one day so i put every things bck together (dropped both tanks since under there wanted to check cond. of pump) anyways got it all bck together drove a good ways and about a block away from home it started acting like it was running outa gas but just put in 20. so milked it to my yard and seen small flames coming from exhaust muffler. (cut out caddy and put muffler in its place). Now im pretty mechanically inclined but i can not figure out what the heck. pumps are good sensors should be good most were recently changed i just dont know so if any one has and idea plz plz help

well i figured out what the problem was, well partly i tried posting the about 3 hours ago but never went through. it ended up being some kind of fuel pump safty shut off switch sitting just behind the clutch.
