just bought a 1978 f150 ranger...

they guy i bought it from claims it is a 351. the vin # indicates a 400(F14SXXXXXX).

it looks big to me but then again ive been driving a honda civic for awhile.

how can i tell by looking at the block?heads?engine tag?

Pull a plug, stick a straw down(or something else long enough, and soft enough to not scratch) into the cylinder, and have someone turn it over-by hand...with the battery disconnected.Measure the stroke.Thats the only difference.

thanks

So what is the stroke for the 400?

so the heads are the same?

the block is the same?(size, casting, numbers. etc)...

so...the extra displacement comes from the volume of the cylinders ?(via different pistons? diameter bore? rod length? or what?)

do they use different cam?

do they use other internals that are different?

are external accessories the same?
