I have a 78 460, just put a new edelbrock 650 thunder series carb on. I don't know what side to hook the vacume advance into. When i hook it up to the side with vacume at an idle, the engine RPM increases and the exhaust is weak sounding. The ported side seems to work ok and the exhaust sounds good.
Also a question about adjusting the timing. I set it to the factory spec. with the vacume advanced unhooked. Hooking the vacume advance up to the full vacume side of the carb sends the timing way up.
Any info on either of these questions would be appreciated.

Timing should be set with V/A hooked up not disconnected.

The original dist vacuum hose hook up was to a heat actuated valve ( VCV) located on the T-stat housing.

I have the original routing diagram if you need to see it.

Vacuum advance is UNHOOKED AND ALL OPEN VACUUM PORTS PLUGGED for timing setting. To check where the hose plugs in keep the timing light on and it shouldn't advance over 20 to 30 degrees when applying the accelerator and should go back down when the accelerator is released. If it doesn't go back down - it's the wrong hookup. It WILL have an initial jump of a degree or five when plugging the advance back on. That's OK.
