So i was wondering how you tell a 360 from a 390? Im pretty sure there the same engine down to the cranks and rods bein diffrent, may be wrong but i know that they look alike. I was wondering if theres a way to tell by just lookin at it, cause if it turns out my truck has a 360 id consider trackin down a 390 or swapin in 429.

have a machine shop run the block numbers they will know and a 429 does not interchange with that family group would have to make some transmission changes to do so

On the 390, look at the intake and the heads, if you have to take the valve covers off it is a 390. meaning that a little bit of the head is the intake

yes you can change the bell housing out on the t18 and t19 four speed the bell housing from the 351m and the 400 will fit the 429 460 engine family count your valve cover bolts another guy listed these nice to keep in mind

8- 351C/351M/400
7- 429/460
6-289/302/351W
5- 352/360/390/428

So does the 332 352 360 390 406 410 427 428 the only real way is to measure the bore and stroke!!!!

if you are 100% sure that what you are looking at is the original enigine in truck, look at the 4th digit on vin. Y code is 360 2BBL, H code is 390 2BBL, and M code is 390 4 BBL. the only other way to tell would be to measure stroke, 360= 3.50 and 390=3.78.

the 360 had fair torque ratings and had heavy duty internal components for truck use even though the 390 had better horsepower for performance, it just depends on youre wheelin environment or what you want to do. i dont think that you can go wrong with either one.

Externally they are the SAME.

That's why at selling time trucks with 360's MAGICALLY turn into trucks with 390's

he only difference between the 360 and the 390 that i know of is the crank and the rods. The 360 has a short throw with the crank compared to the 390 and it makes the piston travel up with long rods. The 390 has short fat rods. I have seen alot of the 360's come apart because they break a rod.

hey bud, i had a 390 in a 79 bronco that i put in myself. i had the same issue and i discovered that if you take the trans off, take the flywheel off there will be a casting # that will tell you what you have. the 352 stamp on the front right side under the head is typical on all of these blocks. if you find that # on the back of the block it will allow you to find out. good luck! great motor! i liked mine.
