Ok, so there's this dude who's drivin up the road in third, drops it in fourth and the trans starts immediately soundin like a chainsaw tryin to cut through 1/2 inch plate. Did he miss 4th and hit reverse? If so, did he completely fry his 5 speed? Every time I... he lets off the clutch in any gear, especially 3rd fourth and reverse, it does the chainsaw immitation until the rpm's get up good. And forget reverse.
Seriously, does this sound like what happened? Or is there somethin else that could cause what I'm describin? I just got done replacin the concentric slave no more than a month ago.
Thanks for any responses.

I'm not 100% sure but it could be damaged or chipped gear teeth for that particular gear or damaged synchronizer.

I was thinkin synchros. It's not as bad as it seemed yesterday. I can get into first fine. Second is good too, mostly but not when I'm tryin to shift into it after letting the truck coast for a bit. Third clicks at me, but not sooooo bad if I'm very careful. 4th is the worst, but still, not as bad as it was now that I know it's tender. Sliding into a gear after slowin down is where I hear the most complaining.
Also, now that I've calmed down and thought about the truck and how it's been handling since I got it. It's been makin a single click noise when I let the truck coast down hills in say fourth to keep the truck from barrelin down hills. Is this the sort of treatment that will harm a transmission? If so, what will it do to it?
This is only my second manual trans ever. The first being an 86 ranger that I loved drivin, but never had a problem with the trans in the 3 years I had it.
Thanks again for any opinions and/or info.

The clicking sound, in the long run, will probably shortin the life span, then again it could last a while. If you have to be careful with it everytime you drive it, you may want to get it checked out anyway before it leaves you stranded.

yeah, I'm sure the clickin is more of a grinding of gear teeth on gear teeth, so I'm sure the life span is short at best. I don't drive it much, just tryin to get a feel for what it's doin inside. From messin with it today it seems like if the engine wants to go faster than the tranny, the thing grinds like an old windup toy. If I give it gas it stops grindin. I don't know, worst comes to worst I can grab an old tranny from a junkyard but I'd rather know what it's doin before I jump to that. If it's the synchros I can grab a bag of em off the internet for like 80 bucks and play for a day or so. I just need some help translatin what this poor old bastard is tryin to tell me when he grumbles at me so loud.
