Brief description of me. I have twin daughters 4 yrs old, a wife and pair of Siberian Huskies. I just, as of 4 days ago, totaled my 94 gt mustang. But I have decided I want a ford truck. I am a ford fanatic. Undecided as to which yr or f series I want. That's where I need some help. Hopefully I can get some answers about the good and bad of different years before I commit(and with any luck avoid the one that nobody wants).

What I have to have is 4 full size doors for the twins. 4x4 is a must. would like a moon\sunroof. Engine diesel is preferred but will settle for a v8. Biggest thing is I have only about 5 k to play with. Needs to be a good daily driver with a reliable engine and transmission but I do enjoy working on cars and trucks. So I'm looking for opinions on either the F150 or F250. Any cons or pros are also needed. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Zone!

Too Bad it was the end of the road for your 'Stang.

Hopefully I can offer some advice that will get you on the right track. $5,000 for a truck means buying something older (unfortunately). I live in the OR, WA, ID area of the States where $5k will allow you to get a 1997-2000 F-150 or a F-250 1996 or older. If you want a moon-roof your looking at the 1997 and up years. And you will want AT LEAST an XLT package truck since this will be a family rig.

You have a family, so I recommend a F-150 that is 1997 or newer because those have the 3 door extended cab. (I think, that the 1999 ext. cabs got a 4th door.) But then again the ext. cab only has half rear doors so you might want, a 1996 or older quad-cab F-250 and have a larger rear seating for those car seats.

I know that the 1997-2003 4.6L V8 engines are reliable as hell. Only a new A/C unit had to be replaced in my truck out in the driveway. The 5.4L V8 engines are a lil' more clunky and have knocking sound as they warm up. I don't know much about the diesel engines (never have owned one).

I, personally, wouldn't get a F-150 quad-cab unless it had a full (regular) bed. The short, 4-foot boxes just don't have enough room.

again,

Welcome and enjoy this great site!

1997 F-150 XLT -- 4.6L -- Automatic -- 2WD 3.55 Limited-Slip (ext Cab, reg Bed)

1984 F-350 XL -- 460in³ -- C6 -- 2WD (Crew Cab, Long Bed)

Hi Dave,
Saw your post regarding buying a truck to haul your twins. Five g's can get you something nice. Just keep looking and do not settle, wait till you see the one that says "hey, I am the one" To encourage your search, I recently bought a work truck that I wanted to be reliable and look nice. I found an 86 f250 for 3200 bucks that has no rust, runs great [has 351W v8] Not good on gas though as you can imagine. I looked at a million trucks that guys wanted 5 grand for and the mileage was above 200k. Mine has 97k which is pretty low for an 86. The moral of the story is there is one out there for the right price with all you need, just keep looking. BTW, I looked at and test drove about 15 trucks before I found this one. You can try local Craigslist and when you see the one you like, jump on it fast or it will be gone.
Good Hunting, and bless your little girls, Jimmy
