I have a 80-82 1/2 ton 4x4, Ford Dana 44, in a 56 Willys wagon that I have been driving for about ten years.  I developed a leak at the right front axle tube and removed the axle.  All I see is a slinger in the tube located near the differential and I am guessing that is where the fluid is getting by.  Would anyone know how to best deal with this part?  If it needs replacing, the only way I see to get it out is to remove the axle from the other side and then the differential.

 

I rarely use the front differential but when I do, it leaks worse after a trip into the woods.  A repair manual shows the slinger but no other seal.  The axle shaft has a machined surface near where the slinger is located but I cannot determine if the slinger has an inner rubber surface or how it would keep the gear oil out of the tube.  And of course no parts are available locally to determine what this looks like.

 

Any help appreciated.  New to this site but it looks like a wealth of information here.

In looking at the Chilton schematic, I may have the earlier setup but it is hard to determine.  So the 1980 and up may be incorrect info but the axle tube I have does not have a seal on the outside end near the universal...if that helps make it more clear....or not.  Wish I knew for sure what year this is.

For anyone following this, I believe I have the answer although it's not the easy one I wanted.  Turns out there is a seal next to the differential but it is only serviced by removing the pinion gear assemble and working from inside the housing.  I am told that is a difficult task at best.  I may try to find a rubber O-ring or something to seal against the slinger and see if I can slow down the leak or maybe stop it.  If that does not work, then I have to find someone who sells the seal and go back in for the more difficult job.

As for figuring out what year of axle you have, try rolling up to a Ford Parts Department and tell them your looking for a pert but need help determining what year. Normally you'll get helped.
