Hello when you say its done do you mean you just completed it ? Did you check the fluid ? Is the flywheel bolted to the torque convertor ? What transmission is it ? just some things to check Ive gotten excited about a project being done and forgot some of the simplest things before . :D

o-k, when i say done, i don't mean a completed project. more like "stick a fork in it, it's done". the fluid is good, but how do i check the flywheel bolts? it is an AOD tranny.

LOL OK well if you havent had the tranny out then the bolts not being connected is probably not whats going on . Ok if your laying under the truck looking back at the front of the transmission to the right of the starter theres a cover with 2 I think 10mm bolts that comes off for inspection of the flywheel . Take it off and you may have to turn the motor over 15/16,s bolt on harmonic balancer with a long ratchet and youd be able to do this from the underside . You can turn motor over and you will see the 4 bolts well nuts that hold the torque convertor to the flywheel . There probably fine and if there fluid in it then its either really messed up or possibly the transfercase is in the neutral position . That would make it not move too . If that dont work I have a buddy that works for ford and he loves those trannys so ill ask him what might be causeing it . :D

o-k. as far as i can tell the flywheel and torque converter are connected. the bolts/nuts are still there. maybe the transfer case is stuck in neutral, but i can hear it "click" through 2wd, 4hi and 4lo. could you ask your friend? any help from anyone would be appreciated.
thanks.

My experience with trannies going bad has been driving down the road and losing one gear at a time, like 3rd, then 2nd, and limping home in 1st. I've only had one just disintegrate all of a sudden, and it was a Jeep (Never Again!). I would suspect a faulty sensor on any electronic-controlled motor, or a fluid-pressure problem on the AOD/C6 whenever you suddenly lose all gears. Your best bet is to seek out a competent transmission shop, and it may take 3 or 4 visits to find the right one. Most will try to get you to rebuild it, but one will have the right answer. It could be a plugged filter, modulator valve, or even a transfer case defect.

Edit: Check the fluid level while in Park with engine running, then shift thru the gears several times. Be sure the level is correct. The AOD is a "finicky" tranny.

o-k everyone, thanks for the help. as far as i can tell the transfer case is not stuck in neutral, it does have fluid in the tranny and it is still f@#&*d. does anyone know if there is an electrical pump for the tranny fluid? or is there an electrical "neutral safety" switch? are these possibilities? i am trying to do as much as i can by myself because since it doesn't drive i would have to get it towed to a shop. $$$$ i don't have. please help. thanks.

If the tranny has alot of miles it maybe time to go ahead and have it rebuilt for a piece of mine. You'll get out cheaper pulling the tranny your self and taken it in. then having a shop to take it out.

also is the shift linkage hooked up and/or adjusted right at the tranny? I've seen some slip off and still feel like it's hitting gears when sifting at the column. Most like stated above go out one gear at a time. Seems you should be able to feel something trying to go in one of the gears. not just dead.

as far as i can tell the linkage is hooked up correctly at the tranny. with someone in the car and shifting through the gears i can look under it and see the linkage moving.
i haven't felt any problems with it before, i went out of town for three weeks, came back and now no gears.
quick question on the fluid. if there is too much could it also do this? obviously if there is none that means no gears also, right?

any suggestions on a decent tranny shop in the dallas/N. texas area?

thanks again for all of the help.
lucas.

Cheapiest I found was Bowers(sp?) off highway 34 just south of Greenville. So far not complaints with his work after 2 years of hard offroading. Every place I called in the Dallas area wanted $500+ to rebuild my C6 if i pulled it. He charged $250 if I pulled it or $500 if he did it all. Since i already figured $500 was it til I found him I went ahead and let him do it all. you won't find prices that low for a AOD, but they maybe cheaper then the rest. I'll dig out his card for correct spelling of name and phone # if you like.

check the filter to see if it might be stopped up sometimes the fluid gets a brown color like a varnish looking fluid if it does there is a good chance the filter needs replaced try that if it goes in gear ok you need to drain the torque convertor
and put all new fluid in after doing this you might have to repeat the process
after driveing it for a couple of weeks to get all that nasty fluid out
