when in four wheel drive, it jurks and pops hard and loud. what wrong with my pos?

Could be the hubs, could be the axle shaft u-joints.

Do you have a locker up front? They make noise.
Otherwise I bet its a bad hub.

I would check the hub first. If thats not it I would lift the front end off the ground with it in 4 wheel drive and turn the tires by hand and see if you can pin point the source of the noise.

Is this a new noise?
Does it make the noise all the time?
On dirt?
On pavement?
Cornering?
Straight line?

bad hub.
1984 Bronco XLT, 351W H.O., C-6 AT, Ford 9", SkyJ 6" lift, 35" tires on MT Classic rims, S&W Racecars 10-pt cage kit, custom "shaker" assembly.

we checked the hubs, put new ones. got the rear off the ground put it in gear, rear tires turned, front drive shaft turned but not the wheels. I think its in the third member. poss. broken spider gear. oh, and everything in the front axle is still stock

never mind, we found the problem. it was a shattered spider gear. now it's fixed.
