Have you checked for loose PS belt? uneven tire pressure? lubricated front end parts? The pump itself could defective.

The only thing that comes to mind would be that the shaft u-joint may need to be replaced.

Sometimes when these old trucks sit they develop air bubbles in the PS lines. Try to jack the front end up and while the tires are off the ground turn the wheel back and forth to push the air out. Air bubbles will also form in the line when the PS fluid gets too hot so you might need a PS fluid cooler..

My 76 didn't have a ujoint at the steering column/box. It had a rag joint that broke.

Sounds like an alignment issue. why it just started like that, I have no idea. jack it up, grab a tire and try to wobble it, it shouldn't wobble at all, if it does, you need parts. also chech the bushings on your track bar. my guess is you need ball joints (or king pins, whichever you have)

I had the same problem with my 78 f150 4x4. The steering acted like it had detents in it, hard spots in steering. It was the u joint on the steer shaft binding up. My truck sat for 10 years, but had this problem previously. I had already replaced the steer box and pump then gave up. But after driving it and lubricating it with PB Blaster it loosened up and is okay now. Hope this helps.
