I have a 1978 F-150 4x4. Currently, It has the beaten dog of a motor, 351m. I want to loose that motor and swap in a different motor. I dont want to go 400m and I dont want to do a 460 swap because of gas prices. I am thinking a 302 will be to under powered for me, so I think a 351w or maybe a 351c will be the ticket. I have been looking around to find out what I need to do to put a 351w in my truck but so far nothing indepth enough to know exactly what all is needed to be done. Thanks alot to who ever can give me definite details.

I did the modified to Windsor swap in my 2wd F100.I had to change the transmission as well to match the small block motor, the 351C is a big block so that might be a better choice.

my advise, use the extra money you would use to swap the engine, and reabuild the motor. Take it to an engine shop, maybe a perfomance shop, you would be suprised how much money you will eat up just making the simple change between an "m" and a "w". Plus the modifieds have gotten allot of bad press, they arn't that bad of a motor, we had a truck with a 400 m and it ran for 200,000 mi. allways had plenty of hp, gas milage wasn't the best, but what can you expect from a 4.11 gear. I have plenty of realitives that have had the mods as well. anyway I hope this helps,

I wanna do the 351w because i have the motor and the bell housing. I just need to know what motor mounts put the motor where it needs to be.

Those 351m motors do get a lot of crap but i found a site that has a pretty detailed buildup of one and i think iam going to go for that and see how far it gets me. The site is projectbronco.com seemed to be pretty decent but since iam in college it might be a little bit before i can come up with the money....unless anyone wants to send some my way......

the 351cleveland is considered a big block but it has the same bolt pattern as a 302 or 351w. your 351m is the same motor as the 400m and has the same bolt pattern as a 429 or 460. hope this will help

Cletus is correct, the 351M and the 400 are the same block, diff piston, cam, and a longer stroke, from what I hear. I've been reading alot trying to determine what I had in mine. Here's a link that might help determine what dirrection to go. You might be able to save a few$ and get turned from a 351M to a 400.
Good Luck, hope it helps.
