Hi,

I am new to the forum and could not find any info on this topic, so I am asking it here.

I have a 1975 F-250 4x4 Custom which has the gas tank behind the seat in the cab just waiting to incinerate me. I would like to eliminate this gas tank and put one in place of the spare tire like I have on my 1978 F-250 Custom. But the problem is that the frame rails on the 1975 are only about 28" on the inside. All the tanks I've seen measure about 34-1/2" to fit between the frame of the 1978-79 trucks. Yet they list them as able to fit 1973-79. So I have two questions...

First, why do all the manufacturers claim on their websites that the tanks fit 1973-79 if they only fit 1978-79 trucks? Am I missing something?

Second, does anyone know of a company that sells gas tanks that fit between the more narrow rear frame of a 1973-1977 4x4 F-series?

Any info would be great.

Try lmctruck.com. They have tanks made just for our trucks. Not cheap, but it will be right.

Hey David,
I have the factory repair manuals and they give the information about what your truck came with based on the door sticker and part numbers on the parts. So on the chart (its about five pages long) they state that no highboy 4x4 came with a rear tank. You could only get the one in the cab and a side mount but not the rear tank. Now that does not mean that the men on the assembly line did not install rear tanks for special orders or their buddies. But for the most part no rear tanks. I too have a 76 ranger. I have the rear tank and the side tank. Drop me an e-mail, I might have some stuff for you.

There is a company Aerotanks.com I think that makes a custom tank but if you are ready for a little project you can move the rear cross member back about 6 inches, and put a Bronco II fuel tank out of an 84 it will fit right in minor fabrication with a front cross member and strapping. I just finnished mine and it works great.
I am in to it about 250 (new tank, straps and skid plate{used and modifies}[top straps from a 78 2x4 rear tank] new sending unit, custom gauge, and new wires.

I can try to send you pictures

They list them for a 73 to79 because they fit the 1/2 ton trucks. They have a wider frame than your 75 F250. I went through this same problem and I'm like you with wanting to get that tank out of my cab. I am cheap and didn't want to drop the money on a custom built tank. I couldn't find a after market one that would hold enough gas and was the right shape. I put one of those half ton tanks in my 75 F250. It took some work and is not perfect but I like it better that the cab tank. I mounted it in side ways with the filler neck out the back so it will be filled behind the lisense plate. Along with making the straps to mount it I had to put a 2 inch body lift on the truck so my bed would clear the tank.

I have a 74 and ordered a tank and it was too big for the frame rails so i ended up cutting about 6 inches out of the center of the tank and welding it back together, had to pretty much make my own sending unit out of two that i had, and I also had to make two custom crossmembers........ needless to say, a ton of work.

Here is what it looks like on a 73 F250:

Plastic - yuk. No plastic is impermeable and they're all subject to the elements (especially of time). Why not try one out of a car? Or use two small tanks (dual tanks)? Either way I agree - tanks should remain under the rear of the car as far from the heat of the engine (and interior) as possible.

I used the one by Aerotanks. Expensive to say the least and there are some design issues, but nothing too bad.

If you need a sending unit (brand new) for a rear tank for a "73" 1/2 ton, I have one!
